New Delhi, 26th Dec. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of MT Vasudevan Nair, an iconic figure in Malayalam cinema and literature. Nair passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 91, due to age-related ailments at his residence in Kozhikode, Kerala.
In a heartfelt message posted on X, PM Modi said, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri MT Vasudevan Nair Ji, one of the most respected figures in Malayalam cinema and literature. His works, with their profound exploration of human emotions, have shaped generations and will continue to inspire many more. He also gave voice to the silent and marginalised. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
MT Vasudevan Nair, a celebrated writer, director, and screenplay artist, was revered for his unparalleled contributions to Indian literature and cinema. His works often delved into the intricacies of human relationships and the lives of the underprivileged, earning him numerous accolades, including the Jnanpith Award and multiple National Film Awards.
Widely regarded as a literary giant, Shri Nair’s novels and short stories, such as “Randamoozham” and “Naalukettu,” remain timeless masterpieces. His screenplays for films like “Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha” and “Nirmalyam” redefined storytelling in Indian cinema.
The loss of Nair marks the end of an era in Malayalam cultural and artistic history. Tributes poured in from across the nation, with leaders, literary enthusiasts, and admirers mourning the departure of a visionary who gave a voice to the voiceless and illuminated the beauty of human emotions through his storytelling. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
