In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi stated, “Saddened by the passing of former Kerala CM Shri VS Achuthanandan Ji. He devoted many years of his life to public service and Kerala’s progress.”

Recalling their interactions during their respective tenures, the Prime Minister added, “I recall our interactions when we both served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this sad hour.”

V.S. Achuthanandan, popularly known as ‘VS’, served as the Chief Minister of Kerala from 2006 to 2011, becoming the oldest person to assume the office at 82. A founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), he was a lifelong champion of workers’ rights, land reforms, and social justice. His political career spanned over eight decades, during which he also served multiple terms as Leader of the Opposition and was known for his austere lifestyle and anti-corruption crusades, including significant demolition drives against illegal encroachments.

His demise marks the end of an era in Kerala’s political landscape, with tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum acknowledging his immense contributions to the state and the Communist movement.
