Thimphu, 11th Nov: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, in Thimphu on Tuesday to further enhance the historic and time-tested friendship between India and Bhutan.
During the meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations and discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest. The King of Bhutan expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the recent Delhi tragedy.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed his deep appreciation for the visionary leadership of Bhutan’s monarchs — the Druk Gyalpos — in shaping the enduring partnership between the two nations. His Majesty, in turn, expressed gratitude for India’s consistent support in Bhutan’s socio-economic development journey.

The leaders jointly prayed before the Holy Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India, currently enshrined at the Grand Kuenrey Hall, Tashichhodzong. The exposition coincides with the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of the Fourth King of Bhutan and the Global Peace Prayer Festival.
In a major development, the two leaders jointly inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, marking a new milestone in the India-Bhutan energy partnership. The project underscores the shared commitment to sustainable growth and has brought tangible benefits to citizens in both countries.
They also witnessed the exchange of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the areas of renewable energy, mental health services, and healthcare. To further support Bhutan’s developmental aspirations, India announced a ₹4,000 crore concessional Line of Credit for energy projects.
The meeting reaffirmed the deep-rooted friendship and strategic cooperation between India and Bhutan, built on mutual trust, shared values, and a common vision for regional stability and prosperity.
