New Delhi, 19th Jan. Amid recent controversies surrounding Bollywood movies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday advised Bharatiya Janata Party members and leaders to not make unnecessary remarks on irrelevant issues such as movies.

Speaking on the second day of the BJP’s national executive meeting, Modi suggested that unnecessary remarks on irrelevant issues such as movies put the party’s development agenda on hold.

Several films, TV shows, and web series have recently been at the center of controversy after being accused of offending Hindu sentiments and culture. The most recent film to face boycott calls is ‘Pathaan,’ starring Shah Rukh Khan. The film’s ‘Besharam Rang’ song, which features Deepika Padukone in a saffron bikini, has riled up sections of society, including BJP leaders like Narottam Mishra and Ram Kadam.

Madhya Pradesh home minister Narottam Mishra had even threatened to stop the release of the spy action thriller if certain scenes were not ‘rectified’. The minister had said the scenes were ‘highly objectionable’ and shot with a ‘dirty mindset’.

Mishra has a history of opposing films, web shows, and advertisements that he considers to be offensive to Hinduism. In October of last year, the BJP leader challenged the makers of the Ramayana-based film ‘Adipurush’ with legal action if scenes depicting Hindu religious figures in an allegedly inappropriate manner were not removed.

Ram Kadam, a BJP MLA, also objected to the song, calling it an insult to Hinduism. In a tweet, the lawmaker stated that Maharashtra has a Hindutva government and that the film’s creators must apologize to the saints who have been offended by the song.
