New Delhi, 6th Aug: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, received the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the diplomatic relationship between the two nations. The visit, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, saw the elevation of bilateral ties to a “Strategic Partnership.”
Following a ceremonial welcome, President Murmu hosted a banquet in honour of President Marcos Jr. In her address, she welcomed the Philippine President on his first state visit to India and highlighted the longstanding friendship rooted in civilizational contacts, historical ties, and shared values.
President Murmu noted that the wide-ranging cooperation between the two countries, which encompasses trade, defence, and security, will be further bolstered by the new partnership. She underscored the importance of the Philippines as a key partner in India’s Act East Policy, Vision MAHASAGAR, and its approach to the Indo-Pacific.
The President also thanked the Philippine government for its “strong condemnation” of a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, acknowledging its solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism. She reiterated India’s commitment to development cooperation, including the implementation of Quick Impact Projects designed to directly benefit local communities.
Both leaders agreed that the visit would help build a stronger partnership for the continuing peace, stability, and prosperity of the two countries and the broader region. President Murmu also extended her good wishes to the Philippines for its upcoming term as the Chair of ASEAN next year.
