New Delhi, 20th April. Despite scorching temperatures and challenging weather conditions, the first phase of the General Elections 2024 witnessed a commendable voter turnout across 21 States and Union Territories. Polling stations remained abuzz with activity as voters from diverse backgrounds enthusiastically exercised their democratic right, contributing to a vibrant display of civic responsibility.
With polling completed for 10 States and Union Territories, including significant regions of the North East, the Election Commission commended the voters and election machinery for their dedicated participation and meticulous organization.
Preliminary data indicates a voter turnout exceeding 60% across the nation by 7:00 PM, with figures expected to rise further as reports from all polling stations are compiled.
The Election Commission, under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Shri Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, closely monitored the polling process, ensuring its smooth conduct.
In a heartening demonstration of democracy in action, voters from urban centers to remote villages converged at polling stations, contributing to the kaleidoscope of electoral fervor. The seamless conduct of polling was a result of meticulous planning and execution by the Election Commission and its officials.
In tribal areas affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), voters embraced the ballot over the bullet, reaffirming their commitment to peace and democracy. Notably, 56 villages in Bastar exercised their franchise within their own communities for the first time in a Lok Sabha Election, signifying a significant step towards inclusive electoral participation.
Communities across the nation benefitted from the Assured Minimum Facilities provided at polling stations, ensuring a comfortable and accessible voting experience for all. Despite adverse weather conditions, voters turned out in vibrant attire, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of India.
Historic moments were witnessed as voters from tribal communities, such as the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar, cast their votes for the first time in General Elections 2024.
In Mizoram, an elderly couple reaffirmed their commitment to voting together, while an elderly woman in Arunachal Pradesh trekked to the polling station independently, showcasing unwavering dedication to the electoral process.
As polling for Phase 1 concludes in several States and Union Territories, the Election Commission remains committed to ensuring a smooth, transparent, and inclusive electoral process in the subsequent phases of the General Elections 2024.
