New Delhi, 6th Feb. A parliamentary delegation from the Republic of Suriname, led by Marinus Bee, Chairman of the National Assembly of Suriname, paid a visit to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Expressing warm regards, President Murmu highlighted the enduring warmth and friendship characterizing the relations between India and Suriname. She emphasized the significance of robust people-to-people contacts, cultural ties, and shared perspectives on global issues in fostering these relations.
President Murmu reflected on the pivotal exchanges marking 2023, notably President Chandrikapersad Santokhi’s visit to India in January and her own State Visit to Suriname in June, marking her first international visit since assuming office.
She recalled the special commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in Suriname, underscoring the gracious welcome extended by the Surinamese government and people.
Pointing towards untapped potential, President Murmu emphasized the avenues for bilateral trade and economic cooperation in diverse sectors such as health, Ayurveda, agriculture, renewable energy, digital technologies, education, culture, and tourism.
President Murmu highlighted the importance of parliamentary exchanges, envisioning them as pivotal for fostering interaction between the two democratic nations. She expressed confidence that the delegation’s visit would deepen their understanding of India’s robust democratic framework.
The meeting concluded on a note of optimism, reaffirming the commitment to further strengthen the enduring bond between India and Suriname.
