Parliament Panel Reviews India–US Trade Impact
Standing Committee on Commerce tours Vizag, Chennai and Coimbatore to assess tariff impact on key sectors.

New Delhi, 6th Jan: The Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce is on a three-day study visit to Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Coimbatore from January 6 to 8, 2026, to evaluate India–United States trade relations and the impact of enhanced US tariffs on key Indian sectors.
During the visit, the Committee is assessing the effect of higher tariffs on exports and the measures taken by financial institutions as well as Central and State governments to mitigate adverse impacts.
In Visakhapatnam, the panel met with stakeholders and State Government representatives with a focus on the Indian marine sector. Members interacted with representatives of fisheries, export promotion councils and financial institutions, and visited the Fishing Harbour and sea cages off Ramakrishna Beach to understand on-ground challenges.
On January 7, the Committee will travel to Chennai to review the impact of US tariffs on the automotive and leather sectors in discussions with industry representatives and government officials.
On January 8, the Committee will be in Coimbatore to evaluate India–US trade relations in the context of the textile and apparel sector, meeting manufacturers, exporters and representatives of industrial bodies such as the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) and the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI).
Officials from the Department of Commerce, DPIIT, Ministry of Textiles and the MSME Ministry are also participating in the meetings. The visit aims to understand sectoral challenges, address concerns of exporters and explore measures to boost India’s overseas shipments.
