Marking Netaji’s birth anniversary on January 23, the Prime Minister described him as a symbol of courage and national pride whose ideals continue to inspire generations to build a strong and self-reliant India.

In his message, Modi highlighted Netaji’s indomitable spirit and deep patriotism, noting that his vision of freedom went beyond political independence and embraced social unity, self-confidence, and national strength. The Prime Minister said that Parakram Diwas serves as a reminder of India’s rich history of resistance and sacrifice, urging citizens to draw inspiration from Netaji’s life and work.

Personal Memories and Historic Associations

Recalling his personal admiration for Netaji, Modi referred to the launch of the e-Gram Vishwagram Yojana in 2009 from Haripura in Gujarat, a place closely associated with Netaji’s legacy. He remembered the enthusiastic public reception and the emotional connect of people with Netaji’s ideals. The Prime Minister also recalled a major event organised in Ahmedabad in 2012 to commemorate Azad Hind Fauj Day, which brought together individuals inspired by Netaji’s vision of a fearless and independent India.

Modi emphasised that for decades, Netaji’s immense contribution did not receive due recognition, as it did not align with the priorities of those in power. However, he noted that sustained efforts have been made in recent years to restore Netaji’s rightful place in India’s national narrative.

Renewed Efforts to Preserve Netaji’s Legacy

Highlighting key initiatives, the Prime Minister recalled the declassification of files related to Netaji Bose, which has helped the nation gain deeper insight into his life and role in the freedom movement. He also referred to the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Azad Hind Government at the Red Fort and the renaming of Ross Island as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep.

The Prime Minister mentioned the Kranti Mandir museum at the Red Fort, which houses rare historical artefacts related to Netaji and the Indian National Army. He also recalled his visit to Netaji Bhawan in 2021, from where Netaji made his historic escape. Describing the installation of Netaji’s grand statue near India Gate as a powerful symbol of shedding colonial mindset, Modi said it stands as a lasting tribute to India’s spirit of courage.
