Dehradun, 2nd Feb. A panel appointed by the state government on Friday submitted a draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The five-member committee, led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, presented the draft to the chief minister.
The UCC aims to establish a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens, regardless of their religion, in Uttarakhand. If implemented, Uttarakhand will be the first state in India to adopt the UCC, which has been in effect in Goa since the time of Portuguese rule.
A special four-day session of the Uttarakhand Assembly has been scheduled from February 5-8 to pass legislation on the UCC. The draft will be reviewed by the state Cabinet before being presented as a bill in the Assembly. The panel was formed in May 2022 and given multiple extensions to thoroughly examine all aspects before finalizing its report.
During the process, the panel received 233,000 written suggestions and conducted 60 meetings, engaging with approximately 60,000 individuals. Enacting UCC legislation will fulfill a significant promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2022 Assembly elections, in which they secured a landslide victory for the second consecutive term, a first in the state’s history since its establishment in 2000.
