New Delhi, 16th June. P Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member, resigned from his Maharashtra seat on Thursday, citing upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

“I am required to resign my seat from the state of Maharashtra as a result of my election to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. As a result, I tendered my resignation from the seat from Maharashtra today “Today, the Congressman sent out a tweet.

The tweet went on to say, “My resignation has been accepted by the Hon’ble Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. It was an honour for me to represent Maharashtra. I wish Maharashtra’s people all the best for the future, including peace and prosperity.” In a closely contested election on June 11, the BJP won eight of the 16 Rajya Sabha seats in the four states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Haryana), while the Congress won five. On June 10, Maharashtra held elections for six seats in the Upper House of Parliament, four seats each in Karnataka and Rajasthan, and two seats in Haryana. On June 11, the results for all four states were announced early in the morning.

Counting was halted for more than eight hours in two states, Haryana and Maharashtra, due to complaints of cross-voting and rule violations. The ruling alliance of the Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar’s NCP, and the Congress won three out of six seats in Maharashtra, where the counting of votes was greatly delayed, while the BJP won three seats. Union Minister Piyush Goyal, former state Minister Anil Bonde, and party leader Dhananjay Mahadik are among the BJP’s winners.

Praful Patel of the NCP, Imran Pratapgadi of the Congress, and Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena were also elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.

Both the BJP and the Shiv Sena filed complaints with the Maharashtra Election Commission, alleging cross-voting and seeking disqualification of votes.

With the Presidential elections coming up next month, the Rajya Sabha election is crucial. The Rajya Sabha elections were held every two years to fill 57 seats in the Upper House from 15 states. 41 candidates, representing various parties in various states, were unopposed.

Eleven from Uttar Pradesh, six from Tamil Nadu, five from Bihar, four from Andhra Pradesh, three each from Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, two each from Chattisgarh, Punjab, Telangana, and Jharkhand, and one from Uttarkhand were among the newly elected candidates.

The BJP won 14 of the 41 seats, including eight in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, and one each in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand.
