New Delhi, 22nd June: All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi launched a sharp rebuke at Pakistan on Saturday, following its contradictory stance on the United States’ airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. In a pointed jibe, Owaisi asked whether Pakistan still believes US President Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his supposed mediation efforts last month.
His remarks come a day after Islamabad announced its intent to recommend Trump for the prestigious award, citing his “constructive role” in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. However, following US-led strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan—Islamabad reversed its stance, condemning the military action as a violation of international law and supporting Iran’s right to self-defence under the UN Charter.
“We should ask Pakistanis if they still want Trump to get the Nobel Peace Prize for this. Did their General have dinner with Trump for this?” Owaisi said in a caustic comment to ANI, ridiculing Pakistan’s abrupt volte-face.
He also criticised the narrative of Iran possessing nuclear weapons, calling it a recurring tactic. “The same pretext was used in Iraq and Libya, and nothing came out of it,” he remarked.
This marks the first time the US has targeted nuclear facilities in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. President Trump, in a post-strike statement, warned, “Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the US strikes, calling them a “grave and unprecedented violation” of international law and accusing Washington of colluding with Israel. “This aggression reveals the depth of American foreign policy depravity,” Tehran said.
The geopolitical shockwaves from the attack have triggered renewed tensions in the already volatile region, with world leaders calling for immediate de-escalation.
