The Mumbai police on Tuesday detained more than 40 individuals who staged a protest in front of the state secretariat, demanding jobs on compassionate grounds.

Led by the Rajya Safai Kamgar Sanghatna representing sanitation workers, the demonstrators gathered at the Mantralaya, the state secretariat, around 2:30 pm on Tuesday.

Seeking to address their concerns, some protestors expressed a desire to meet with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, law enforcement officials intervened, detaining the agitators and relocating them to Azad Maidan in south Mumbai.

Charges have been filed against the protestors for violating prohibitory orders and engaging in unlawful assembly under Section 37 (1)(e) 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
