Kolkata, 22nd Oct: Tension gripped Kolkata’s Bhowanipore area on Tuesday after enraged residents assaulted the father and stepmother of 11-year-old Suranjana Singh, whose body was found in a partially hanging state inside a cupboard at their home on Monday.

Police said Suranjana was the niece of Sanjay Roy, the prime convict in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, who is currently serving a life sentence for killing an on-duty doctor.

The accused couple, Bhola Singh and his wife Pooja, were allegedly attempting to flee their residence when angry neighbours confronted and attacked them, accusing the duo of routinely torturing the child. Eyewitnesses said locals dragged the stepmother by her hair and thrashed the father with shoes before police arrived and rescued the couple, escorting them to Alipore police station.

Bhola Singh had earlier married Babita, Sanjay Roy’s elder sister, with whom he had Suranjana. After Babita’s death by suicide, he married her younger sister, Pooja. The girl, a Class 5 student, was discovered hanging from a hanger with a cloth tied around her neck. She was rushed to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Neighbours alleged that the couple often subjected the girl to severe physical and mental abuse, frequently throwing her out of the house at night. Her grandmother also claimed that the child was beaten with belts and her head was banged against walls.

Speaking to the media, Bhola Singh said, “I have no child left. There is no meaning to my life anymore.”

Police said the preliminary autopsy indicated a possible suicide, though homicide has not been ruled out. “We are awaiting the detailed post-mortem and forensic reports to determine the exact cause of death,” a senior officer stated.
