Opposition Slams Government Over New Delhi Railway Station Stampede That Claimed 18 Lives

New Delhi.

A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night resulted in the loss of 18 lives, sparking sharp criticism from the Opposition. Several opposition leaders held the Railways’ mismanagement and the government’s negligence responsible for the disaster.

Former Railway Minister and RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav strongly condemned the incident, calling it a result of poor administration and mismanagement. “This unfortunate incident occurred due to the Railway’s failure. The Railway Minister must take responsibility,” Lalu Yadav said while speaking to the media.

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also lashed out at the government, saying the stampede once again highlighted the incompetence of the Railway system and the insensitivity of the administration. Expressing his grief over the tragedy, he posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“The news of several deaths and injuries due to a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station is extremely painful and distressing. My deepest condolences to the grieving families, and I hope for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Rahul Gandhi further criticized the government for its lack of preparedness, particularly as a large number of devotees were traveling to Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela. “The government and administration should have ensured better crowd management at the station to prevent such a tragedy. No one should lose their life due to mismanagement and negligence,” he added.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also took a swipe at the ruling BJP government, warning it not to cover up the truth about the stampede. He accused the government of failing to handle the growing rush of devotees, which ultimately led to the disaster.

The incident has reignited the debate over passenger safety and railway infrastructure, with the Opposition demanding accountability from the government and the Railway Ministry. Meanwhile, officials have stated that an inquiry has been ordered into the mishap, and further details are awaited.
