New Delhi, 12th Feb: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday shared another video of last week’s confrontation in the Lok Sabha, alleging that opposition MPs abused Speaker Om Birla and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi inside the Speaker’s chamber.
The minister said the nine-second clip was recorded by a Congress MP and showed around 20 to 25 opposition lawmakers entering the Speaker’s chamber and creating a commotion.
“This is the illegal video clip taken by a Congress MP… when 20–25 Congress MPs entered the chamber of the Speaker, abused him, and threatened the Prime Minister. Our party believes in debate and discussion and never encourages MPs to threaten physically,” Rijiju said.
The video shows over a dozen opposition MPs gathered around the Speaker’s desk, speaking loudly, while Birla remains seated. BJP MPs are seen standing quietly on one side along with Rijiju.
Earlier this week, Rijiju had shared another video, claiming it showed opposition MPs behaving in a degrading manner and nearly triggering a physical clash. That clip showed several Congress women MPs standing around the Prime Minister’s seat in the Lok Sabha with a banner, refusing to move despite requests from BJP members. The Prime Minister was not present at the time.
Rijiju described the situation as an unprecedented and unparliamentary stand-off, saying it prompted the Speaker to advise the Prime Minister, who was scheduled to speak, to cancel his address. Birla later said he had received information that the MPs gathered near the Prime Minister’s seat were planning something.
The confrontation began after Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi attempted to read excerpts from former Army chief General M.M. Naravane’s book Four Stars of Destiny on the 2020 Ladakh border standoff with China. The Speaker stopped him, triggering protests by opposition members.
The dispute has escalated into a major political clash between the BJP and the opposition, which has repeatedly accused the Speaker of bias. A notice seeking Birla’s removal has also been submitted, though parliamentary sources indicated it may be rejected due to a clerical error.
