Chandigarh, 14th Oct: Senior IPS officer Om Prakash (OP) Singh has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana, following the leave of incumbent top cop Shatrujeet Singh Kapur amid controversy over the suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar.

“The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP, Haryana, to Om Prakash Singh, IPS (1992 RR), during the leave period of Shatrujeet Singh Kapur,” stated a release by Sumita Mishra Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Haryana.

A 1992 batch officer from Bihar’s Jamui district, OP Singh is the brother-in-law of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He has previously served as Police Commissioner of Ambala/Panchkula, IGP of Faridabad, Hisar and Rewari ranges, and special advisor to former CM Manohar Lal Khattar. He received the Police Medal in 2008 and the President’s Police Medal in 2017.

The appointment comes amid the ongoing probe into Y Puran Kumar’s death. The 52-year-old IPS officer, posted at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak’s Sunaria, allegedly shot himself on October 7, citing systematic harassment, caste-based discrimination, and humiliation by senior officers in a final note. His family has refused post-mortem and cremation until action is taken against the officers named in the note.

A six-member special investigation team has been formed by Chandigarh police to probe the matter. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have condemned the alleged discrimination faced by Puran Kumar, highlighting the broader implications for Dalit officers. Gandhi urged Prime Minister Modi and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini to take strict action.
