Kolkata, 27th Jan: The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed that only two cases of Nipah Virus Disease (NiVD) have been reported in West Bengal since December last year, countering speculative reports circulating in some sections of the media.

According to official data shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, both confirmed cases were promptly responded to through coordinated public health action by the Government of India in close collaboration with the Government of West Bengal.

Following confirmation, health authorities identified, traced, monitored and tested a total of 196 contacts linked to the two cases. All traced contacts were found to be asymptomatic and tested negative for Nipah Virus Disease.

Enhanced surveillance, laboratory testing and field investigations were carried out jointly by central and state health agencies, ensuring timely containment of the cases. Officials confirmed that no additional Nipah cases have been detected so far.

The Health Ministry said the situation is under constant monitoring and that all necessary public health measures are in place to prevent further transmission.

The Ministry also advised the public and media to rely only on verified information released by official sources and to avoid spreading unverified or speculative reports related to Nipah Virus Disease.
