Only Clean-Fuel Buses Allowed in Delhi from November 2026: CAQM Issues Directive

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 4th May:
In a major move to combat air pollution in the capital, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has directed that from November 1, 2026only buses running on clean fuelsCNG, electricity, or BS-VI diesel—will be allowed to enter Delhi.

What’s the New Rule?

  • Ban applies to all buses entering Delhi from other states.
  • Includes tourist, school, contract, and institutional buses.
  • Exemption: Buses registered in Delhi.

Why This Decision?

Many buses entering Delhi still run on older, polluting fuels, worsening the city’s already severe air quality. CAQM had earlier advised neighboring states to switch to clean-fuel vehicles, but compliance remained low.

Affected States

The directive is mainly aimed at buses from:

  • Haryana
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Rajasthan
  • Punjab
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Jammu and Kashmir

 How Will It Be Enforced?

  • Delhi Transport Department and Traffic Police will monitor compliance.
  • Use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems and RFID scanners at entry points to detect violations.

What Should Bus Operators Do?

  • Switch to CNG, electric, or BS-VI diesel buses before the deadline.
  • Stay updated via state transport authorities.
  • Avoid last-minute disruptions by planning ahead.

This directive is part of Delhi’s broader strategy to reduce vehicular pollution and ensure cleaner air for residents. It signals a strong push for green mobility and public health safety in the region.
