New Delhi, 28th June. Varinder Singh, an Olympic and World Cup medalist who played a key role in some of India’s most memorable victories in the 1970s, died on Tuesday morning in Jalandhar. Singh was 75.
Singh was a part of India’s gold-medal winning team at the 1975 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. This is India’s only gold medal from the prestigious tournament, which it won 2-1 over archrival Pakistan in the final.
Varinder Singh was also part of the bronze medal-winning team of India at the 1972 Munich Olympics and silver medal at the 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam.
He also won a silver medal at the 1974 and 1978 Asian Games, respectively. The Indian hockey legend also featured in the Montreal Olympics in 1975.
Varinder received the prestigious Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Hockey India mourned the demise of Varinder Singh.
“Varinder Singh’s achievements will be remembered by the hockey fraternity worldwide,” Hockey India said in a release.
