Activists from NSUI, the student wing of the Congress, on Thursday pasted photographs of prominent figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and social worker Gopabandhu Das on posters featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on college campuses in the state.

The National Students’ Union of India has been opposing the installation of “selfie points” featuring the prime minister in various colleges, as well as the “Nua O” festival organized by the Odisha government.

As part of this program, posters and banners of the chief minister have been displayed in all higher educational institutions in the state.

The student wing workers of the Congress, led by state president Yashir Nawaz, affixed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Bose, and Gopabandhu Das on the posters and banners of PM Modi and Odisha CM at Maharishi College of Natural Law.

The activists also protested at the entrance gate of the college and burned posters of PM Modi and Patnaik.

With elections approaching, both the central government and the BJD government have initiated several programs to attract college students, according to NSUI.

Nawaz alleged that the governments forgot about the students after the elections.

Prior to the 2019 polls, the state government launched the “Biju Yuva Vahini” program and spent Rs 450 crore. However, college students did not benefit from the scheme, he claimed.

Accusing the state of having a collapsed education system, Nawaz stated, “Teacher positions remain vacant in government colleges and universities in Odisha. The students’ union elections were canceled, and the central government discontinued scholarship schemes. Yet, both governments are busy putting up posters on college campuses ahead of the polls.”
