UNITED NATIONS, 20th Jan. UN humanitarian and coordination office OCHA on Friday said that unprecedented flooding in the Republic of the Congo has left over 350,000 people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, in a press release issued in New York.
Over 1.8 million people have been impacted by torrential downpours that have caused usual amount of rainfall on the Congo, impacted 9 out of the country’s 12 departments.
OCHA said the government in Brazzaville declared an emergency, the floods have destroyed or damaged 34 health facilities, 120 schools and over 64,000 houses in past 3 weeks.
The spokesperson Jens Laerke with aid agency said many villages can be reached by boat or canoe, who appealed for $26 million for basic support including shelter, food, health, water, sanitation and hygiene.
UN Central Emergency Response Fund has allocated $3.6 million for emergency and relief efforts.
Mr. Laerke said much more is needed for the people of the Congo due to the destruction of arable land, fruit trees, fishing gear and livestock.
