Moscow, 8th Aug: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval called on Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday, amidst growing global trade tensions. A video clip shared by the Kremlin press service showed Doval and Putin shaking hands before beginning their discussions.

The high-level meeting follows Doval’s earlier talks with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu. Doval arrived in Moscow on Wednesday for a pre-planned visit aimed at holding crucial discussions on bilateral energy and defence ties. A key objective of the visit is to prepare the groundwork for President Putin’s state visit to India, which is expected later this year.

Doval’s trip commenced on the same day that US President Donald Trump issued an executive order, slapping an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods. The order, which doubles the total import duty to 50 per cent, was imposed as a penalty for India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. The timing of Doval’s visit underscores India’s resolve to maintain its strategic partnership with Russia despite external pressure.
