Now Aadhaar Can Be Updated from Home

Aadhaar has grown to become an inseparable part of the life of every Indian. Very soon, citizens will be able to update their Aadhaar details right from their homes through a new “e-Aadhaar App” being launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The linking of citizens to government services and financial systems through a single 12-digit identification number has already played a very important role in the digital transformation of India. However, some of the issues that have always plagued people were related to updating their Aadhaar information-address, phone number, or biometric details—which hitherto often required visits to Aadhaar centers or CSCs.

The new e-Aadhaar app, however, is designed to get rid of this hassle. Now, one would be able to change demographic information like names, addresses, dates of birth, and mobile numbers while sitting in the comfort of one’s home via the internet on either a smartphone or a computer.

Secure Biometric Verification:

The application will have inbuilt biometric authentication, which will enable verification through fingerprints or face recognition without requiring the consumer to physically go to an Aadhaar center.

AI-Powered Error Detection:

The application will use Artificial Intelligence to automatically detect and correct small errors in demographic data, such as spelling mistakes or formatting issues, before submission.

Instant Status Tracking:

The users will be able to track the status of update requests. Notifications for changes in status will be received through SMS and email.

Integration with DigiLocker and UMANG:

The application will be integrated with DigiLocker and UMANG to allow residents to store or share their updated Aadhaar directly in a secure digital manner.

Multilingual Interface:

Considering the linguistic diversity of India, the e-Aadhaar app shall be provided in 12 Indian languages to make it available even for users across rural and semi-urban regions.

How the Process Will Work

The government intends to make the process quite user-friendly. Once the app is launched, the users will have to log in with their Aadhaar number along with an OTP sent to their registered mobile number. After verification, they may select the type of update they want to apply for, whether it is an address update or a correction in the mobile number.

For address updates, a user can upload valid documents that include electricity bills, property tax receipts, or rent agreements. For other demographic details, the app will guide the users through the document verification via a secure e-sign process. Later, the updated details will be verified digitally by the backend system of UIDAI.

The confirmation message will be sent out in a few days, and the digitally signed e-Aadhaar could be downloaded directly by the applicant from the app.

Why This Matters

For millions of Indians, especially the senior citizens, differently-abled persons, and those living in remote areas of the country, visits to Aadhaar centers are time-consuming and often require a lot of physical effort. The new app is expected to make Aadhaar updates completely paperless, presence-less, and cashless, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India mission.

It also constitutes a quantum jump in terms of administrative efficiency. With more than 1.3 billion Aadhaar holders, UIDAI gets millions of requests for updates every year. A digital self-service model will reduce operational burden, lower costs, and speed up processing time multi-fold.

Public Launch and Future Roadmap Initial reports indicate the beta release of the e-Aadhaar app in early 2026, to be followed by a full-scale national launch after testing amongst users and security audits.
