Aizawl, 13th Sept: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched and dedicated development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore in Aizawl, Mizoram, terming the day “historic” as the state capital officially entered India’s railway map.
Addressing citizens via video link after bad weather grounded his travel from Lengpui Airport, the Prime Minister said the North East is fast emerging as “the growth engine of India” and reaffirmed Mizoram’s key role in the Act East Policy and the upcoming North East Economic Corridor.
PM Modi hailed the perseverance of engineers and workers who built 45 tunnels and over 140 bridges through challenging terrain, promising the rail link will transform trade, tourism and access to education and healthcare. He underscored plans to expand air connectivity under the UDAN scheme and stressed that the Centre’s focus is now on regions “long ignored by vote-bank politics.”
The Prime Minister lauded Mizoram’s youth, vibrant start-up culture, and sporting legacy, announcing fresh support through the Khelo India Khel Niti and infrastructure upgrades. He also cited falling GST rates on daily essentials and upcoming price cuts on cement as steps to ease household expenses and spur construction.
Governor V.K. Singh, Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the ceremony. Modi concluded by congratulating Mizoram for joining India’s railway map and expressed confidence that the state will be central to India’s economic and strategic growth.
