New Delhi, 13th Jan: Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on Tuesday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to every citizen, especially those living in remote and island territories, as he virtually addressed a first-of-its-kind Joint Services Multi-Speciality Mega Surgical Camp organised by the Indian Navy at Indira Gandhi Hospital, Kavaratti in Lakshadweep.

Calling the initiative a shining example of the Navy’s nation-building role beyond maritime security, Rajnath Singh said the Tri-Services medical team has brought advanced diagnostics and specialist care directly to the doorsteps of island residents, including cataract surgeries and planned medical procedures.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, while inaugurating the camp, described it as unique in synergy, scope and scale, highlighting the joint participation of all three Services and the wide range of specialists involved.

Nearly 50 sight-restoring cataract surgeries were successfully conducted within just two days, delivering world-class ophthalmic care to residents, with many more procedures scheduled in the coming days.

The Indian Navy is conducting similar camps across Amini, Androth, Agatti, Kavaratti and Minicoy islands, ensuring maximum outreach and accessibility. Apart from curative care, the camp also emphasises holistic well-being through preventive healthcare, lifestyle counselling, nutrition guidance, yoga and millet-based dietary awareness.

The initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of equitable healthcare access for all citizens, reinforcing national programmes like Ayushman Bharat and the philosophy of ‘One Earth, One Health’.
