Rajkot, 15th Oct: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that a 17-year-old boy was allegedly tortured while in police custody at Gandhigram Police Station in Rajkot district, Gujarat. The incident reportedly occurred on September 1, 2025, and came to light on October 6 after a video surfaced on social media.
Observing that the reports, if verified, indicate a serious human rights violation, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Gujarat, directing a detailed report within two weeks.
According to media coverage dated October 7, the video shows an officer pulling the boy’s hair while other police personnel reportedly laughed. The minor had been taken into custody in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred a day earlier. He and his associates were later presented before a juvenile court and remanded to a juvenile detention center, before being released on bail approximately two weeks later.
The NHRC’s intervention underscores its commitment to safeguarding the rights of minors and ensuring accountability within law enforcement agencies.
