PM unveils ₹6,500 crore projects, announces GST cuts and nationwide Demography Mission, calling the East and North East the next engines of India’s growth.

Darrang, 14th Sept: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth about ₹6,500 crore in Darrang, calling the day a historic milestone in Assam’s development journey. He greeted the people on Janmashtami and said that after the success of Operation Sindoor, visiting Assam felt like receiving blessings from Maa Kamakhya.
The Prime Minister described Mangaldoi as a confluence of culture and hope, recalling the contributions of legends like Bhupen Hazarika. He emphasised that Assam’s cultural preservation and rapid development are joint priorities of the Union and State governments, crediting the people of Assam for a growth rate nearing 13 per cent.
Highlighting new projects, Modi said the government is making Assam one of India’s most connected states, with the new ring road linking highways, an airport, railway stations and an inland water terminal. He announced the Kurua–Narengi bridge, which will cut travel time between Guwahati and Darrang drastically.
Modi underlined that improved connectivity, including 5G and broadband, is key to rapid development, bringing tourism, jobs and business opportunities. He also announced major GST reforms starting this Navratri, lowering taxes on cement, cancer medicines, insurance premiums and consumer goods.
The Prime Minister detailed how medical infrastructure has doubled over the last decade, with Assam now home to 24 medical colleges and dedicated cancer hospitals. He set a new target of adding one lakh medical seats in the next five years.
Warning of “conspiracies to alter demographics” in border regions, Modi accused the opposition of encouraging infiltration and vowed to protect the rights of farmers, youth and tribal communities. He launched a nationwide Demography Mission to counter the threat.
Calling on citizens to buy and gift Made in India products during the festive season, Modi concluded by reaffirming his vision to transform Assam and the North East into key engines of a developed India.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were present at the event, which drew a massive crowd and marked a significant moment for Assam’s future.
