Hyderabad, 30th Dec:
As Telangana prepares to welcome 2026, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a high-alert advisory warning citizens against a rising wave of “New Year Greeting Scams” circulating on WhatsApp and Telegram.

Unlike routine fraud attempts, these scams exploit festive trust. Victims receive seemingly innocent messages—often forwarded from known contacts—offering “personalised New Year greetings,” “digital gifts,” or “year-end rewards.” However, the links carry hidden malicious APK files which silently install malware on Android devices.

Once activated, the malware grants hackers near-total control over the victim’s phone. It can read SMS messages, bypass banking two-factor authentication, hijack WhatsApp accounts to spread the scam further, and access personal photos, contacts and microphones—opening the door to financial theft, blackmail and identity fraud.

TGCSB chief Shikha Goel cautioned, “People believe they are opening a greeting card, but in reality, they are handing over the keys to their bank account.”

Safety Advisory from TGCSB
  • Never click unknown greeting or reward links—even from known contacts
  • Do not install APK files received via messaging platforms
  • Enable two-step verification on WhatsApp
  • Download apps only from official app stores
  • If clicked accidentally, disconnect internet, uninstall suspicious apps and inform your bank immediately
