New Delhi, 19th April. In a strategic move that could reshape the political landscape of Nashik, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal announced today the withdrawal of his candidature from the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the region. This decision comes amidst a heated contest between the NCP and the Shiv Sena for dominance in the Nashik constituency.
Bhujbal, a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics and a minister in the state government, revealed to reporters his intention to throw his support behind a candidate nominated by the Mahayuti alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena. With the Nashik seat currently held by Hemant Godse of the ruling Shiv Sena, Mr. Bhujbal’s withdrawal signals a significant shift in the political dynamics of the region.
Expressing urgency in finalizing the candidate selection process, Bhujbal stressed the importance of timely action to avoid any adverse impact on the alliance’s electoral prospects. The NCP leader’s decision to step aside underscores the party’s willingness to prioritize alliance unity over individual ambitions.
The Nashik constituency has emerged as a battleground coveted by multiple political factions, with the NCP making a concerted effort to wrest control from the Shiv Sena. Bhujbal’s candidacy had been a focal point of contention, with the NCP banking on his popularity among the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community and traditional BJP supporters.
However, internal pressures within the BJP, including demands from a faction boasting over 100 former corporators from the Nashik Municipal Corporation and Trimbakeshwar civic body, complicated matters. Despite Bhujbal’s stature as a prominent OBC leader and hopes of securing support from the community, the BJP’s push for the Nashik seat intensified, fueling tensions within the alliance.
With approximately 6.50 lakh OBC, 5.50 lakh Maratha, and 3 lakh tribal voters in Nashik, the constituency holds significant electoral sway.
Bhujbal’s withdrawal opens up new possibilities for the Mahayuti alliance to consolidate support and mount a formidable challenge in the upcoming elections.
