New Delhi, 13th Feb: The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has realised ₹2.40 crore under the Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) framework over the past 45 days, reinforcing efforts to ensure fair sharing of benefits from the use of biological resources.

The amount was collected from ten applications related to research and commercial use of biological resources by entities in the seed, animal feed, and cosmetic sectors.

The benefit-sharing contributions came from the use of a range of agricultural biological resources, including varieties and hybrids of rice, onion, bitter gourd, mustard, cotton, bottle gourd, brinjal, chilli, cucumber, okra, ridge gourd, tomato, and seaweed.

A major portion—₹2.30 crore—was realised from Pioneer Overseas Corporation for the commercial use of mustard and rice hybrids. The remaining contributions were received from East West Seeds India Pvt. Ltd., Advanta Enterprises Ltd., Tokita Seed India Pvt. Ltd., Avalo Inc., and Sea6 Energy Pvt. Ltd. These resources were used to develop improved and hybrid seed varieties, boosting the agro-economy.

Under the ABS mechanism, benefits are shared with institutions, local communities, farmers, and Biodiversity Management Committees that provide the parental seed lines. The system is aimed at enhancing livelihoods and promoting conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at the grassroots level.

The authority said it has introduced simplified and transparent procedures in recent years to facilitate compliance and promote ease of doing business while safeguarding community interests. The seed sector has emerged as a leading contributor under the ABS framework.

In the current financial year 2025–26, the NBA has realised ₹3.42 crore from the seed sector alone. With the latest collection, the cumulative ABS amount realised by the authority has crossed ₹266 crore, of which ₹83 crore has come from the seed sector, making it the second-largest contributor after Red Sanders.

The NBA said it continues to play a key role in implementing India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol, while contributing to national biodiversity targets and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
