Chandigarh, 7th Feb: Congress general secretary in-charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel has confirmed that former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu has been expelled from the party, days after she claimed to have resigned.
Speaking to reporters in Amritsar, Baghel said that Sidhu had earlier been suspended from the party and that the disciplinary process has now culminated in her expulsion.
Baghel was in the city to address the Congress’s MGNREGA Bachao Sangram Rally when he was asked about her status in the party.
The development triggered a sharp response from Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who launched a series of attacks on the Congress leadership, including a direct swipe at Rahul Gandhi on social media.
In her posts, she accused the leadership of being disconnected from ground realities and surrounded by people more interested in personal gain than public service. She alleged that decisions were delayed and claimed that many party functionaries were unwilling to work honestly for Punjab.
Sidhu, who had earlier switched from the BJP to the Congress, said she could continue working for the people of Punjab through social initiatives, even outside formal politics. She also criticised what she described as the party’s tolerance of corrupt leaders.
The former legislator had last week announced that she was quitting the Congress, while also targeting Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. She had accused him of damaging the organisation and alleged an understanding with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in the state.
Her expulsion follows a suspension from the party’s primary membership last month after she stirred controversy with remarks about alleged monetary deals for the chief minister’s post.
