New Delhi, 23rd July. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi to join the investigation into the National Herald case on July 26 instead of July 25, according to sources.
“Earlier, they had called (Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi) on Monday (July 25) for questioning, but now they are saying that they are not in a convenient position on that day. They’re asking for another date,” said Congress general secretary K C Venugopal.
Protests were held across the country on Thursday as the ED questioned Gandhi in connection with the alleged scam. Protests in some areas became violent, with Congress cadres setting fire to vehicles and vandalising public property. In Delhi alone, 56 MPs were detained by police for protesting the ED summons issued to Gandhi.
Gandhi was questioned for more than two hours in an alleged money laundering case involving the National Herald newspaper. The same ED assistant director-level investigation officer who questioned Rahul Gandhi in connection with the matter questioned Gandhi.
The case involves alleged financial irregularities at Young Indian Private Limited, a company promoted by the Congress party that owns the National Herald newspaper. A female officer was also on the questioning team, according to agency reports citing sources.
As previously reported, Sonia Gandhi’s questioning began around 12.30 p.m. and lasted about two hours. While there were reports that the questioning ended at Gandhi’s request, Congress denied the reports, claiming that, contrary to ED information, Gandhi was available for questioning.
The Delhi Police had deployed a large force, including members of the CRPF and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), who had barricaded the stretch between Gandhi’s residence and the ED office.
