New Delhi, 9th June. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in today for his third consecutive term, along with 72 ministers of the new coalition government. The swearing-in ceremony took place on the expansive lawns of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, amidst a forecasted high temperature of 42 degrees Celsius.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to PM Modi, followed by Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah. Nitin Gadkari was the fourth leader to be administered the oath of office.
The new government comprises 30 Cabinet Ministers, 5 Ministers of State with independent charge, and 36 Ministers of State. The allocation of portfolios will be announced at a later time.
At 73 years old, PM Modi will lead a coalition government for the first time since he ascended to the Prime Ministerial role in 2014. This marks a significant shift from his previous two terms, which were characterized by a single-party majority following a decisive “Brand Modi” victory after a decade of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule.
The ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including senior BJP leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Mansukh Mandaviya, who are expected to play significant roles in the new government.
Among the new faces likely to make their debut in the Council of Ministers are Manohar Lal Khattar, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, and Ravneet Singh Bittu. Their presence at the swearing-in underscores the party’s strategy of integrating both experienced and new leaders into the governance framework.
PM Modi’s new government faces the challenge of addressing high public expectations while managing a diverse coalition. In a recent pep talk to the ministers-designate, Modi emphasized humility, integrity, and teamwork as core values for his administration.
“Whatever work will be assigned to you, do that sincerely and be humble as people love those who are humble,” Modi reportedly told the incoming ministers. He also stressed the importance of respect and dignity towards all MPs, irrespective of their party affiliations, and urged ministers to work cohesively with government employees and officers, maintaining probity and transparency.
As the nation looks forward to the unfolding of Modi’s third term, the focus will be on how this coalition government navigates the political landscape, balancing coalition dynamics while driving forward the agenda that has characterized Modi’s previous terms.
