New Delhi, 5th June. Supreme Court of India advocate and social worker Ashwini Upadhyay has written an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change the names of mythological & historical places in the country.

The letter to the PM stated, “The places which are mentioned in the Quran are still in Arabia with the same name and similarly the places which are mentioned in the Bible are also found with the same name, but due to the change of name by the invaders, the places which are described in Veda Purana, Gita, Ramayana, are not found in India and hence some people call our Vedas, Puranas, Gita, Ramayana and Mahabharata imaginary.”

Citing such references, the letter added, “Kirteshwari is one of our 51 Shakti Peethas. Maata’s crown had fallen here, but after breaking Kirteshwari Shaktipeeth, an invader named Murshid Khan changed the name of that holy mythological shrine to Murshidabad and similarly Vindhyachal Shakti Peeth was made Mirzapur by Mirza.”

“Lord Parshuram is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his father’s name is Maharishi Jamadagni and mother’s name is Renuka. There was an ashram of Maharishi Jamdagni at the birthplace of Mata Renuka and that place was called Jamdagnipuram but Jauna Khan made Jamdagni Puram Jaunpur. The name of the city built by King Janak was Videha and hence we also call Mata Sita Vaidehi but Muzaffar Khan made Videha Muzaffarpur,” it said.

The letter further read, “In order to avoid the war, Lord Krishna asked Kauravas for 5 villages – Indraprastha, Sonprastha, Vanprastha, Vyaghra Prastha, Tilprastha. Indraprastha is called Delhi, Sonprastha is called Sonipat, Vanprastha is called Panipat, Vyaghra Prastha is called Baghpat and Tilprastha is called Faridabad by Farid Khan. Queen Draupadi’s father was the king of Panchal, hence Draupadi is called Panchali but Farrukh Khan made Panchal Farrukhabad. At the time of Agyatvas, the Pandavas had taken shelter at King Virat and later Virat Naresh married his daughter to Abhimanyu but Hoshiar Khan made Virat Hoshiarpur. Similarly, Ghazi Khan made Gaj Prastha Ghaziabad.”

Ashwini Upadhyay in the letter further said, “If we talk about historical cities, Begu Khan made Ajatshatru Nagar Begusarai, Sharifuddin made Nalanda Bihar Bihar Sharif, Darbhang Khan made Dwarbanga Darbhanga, Haji Shamsuddin made Haripur Hajipur, Jamal Khan Singhjani. Jamalpur, Ahmadshah changed Karnavati to Ahmedabad, Burhan changed Bhrugupur to Burhanpur, Hoshangshah changed Narmadapuram to Hoshangabad and Ahmad Shah changed Ambikapur to Ahmadnagar.

“Mentally unstable Tughlaq made Devagiri Tughlaqabad, Osman Ali made Dharashiv Osmanabad, Farid Khan made Mokal Har Faridkot, Murad Khan made Ramganganagar Moradabad, Muzaffar Khan made Laxminagar Muzaffarnagar, Shah Jahan made Gomti Nagar Shahjahanpur and Bakhtiyar Khilji made Nalanda Bakhtiyarpur,” it added.

Similarly, “Karimuddin made Karimnagar, Mehboob Khan made Mehboob Nagar, Ali Mir Jafar made Alipur, Nizam made Bhagyanagar Hyderabad, Indore became Nizamabad, Bhithora became Fatehpur, Harigarh became Aligarh, Ambika Nagar was made Amroha, Aryamgarh was made Azam Garh, Jasnaul was made Barabanki and Gadhipur was made Ghazipur.”

Urging the Prime Minister to take cognizance of this serious matter, Upadhyay said, “In addition to the above, there are many other historical cultural religious places whose names were deliberately changed by foreign invaders so that after a few years Vedas, Puranas, Gita, Ramayana and Mahabharata could be described as a fictional book. It is not only a matter of India’s sovereignty but also a matter of respect and identity of Indians as well as religious and cultural freedom, so I humbly request you to create a commission to do a nomenclature immediately to know the original name of historical, cultural and religious places.”
