Nalbari Poll Battle Heats Up as 16 Candidates File Nominations

BJP, Congress, TMC, SUCI and Independents set stage for multi-cornered contests

Nalbari, 23rd March: A total of 16 candidates filed their nomination papers on the final day across three key Assembly constituencies in Nalbari district—Nalbari, Barkhetri and Tihu—setting the stage for multi-cornered contests in the upcoming Assam elections.

In the Barkhetri constituency, Narayan Deka, former MLA and current GMDA chairman, filed his nomination as the BJP candidate. He will face sitting Congress MLA Diganta Barman. Other contenders include SUCI’s Munindra Doley and Trinamool Congress nominee Aminul Islam.

The Nalbari constituency is witnessing a crowded contest, with BJP candidate and minister Jayanta Malla Baruah filing his nomination against Congress candidate Ashok Sharma. SUCI’s Kennedy Pegu is also in the fray, along with several Independent candidates, including Muktar Hussain, Samsul Haque, Safar Ali and Harichandra Boro.

In Tihu constituency, BJP candidate and minister Chandramohan Patowary filed his nomination and will contest against Congress nominee Ratul Patowary. SUCI candidate Pramod Chandra Bhagawati and Independent candidates Narayan Dutta Bhuya and Bharat Rajbanshi have also entered the race.

With candidates from multiple parties and Independents in the fray across all three constituencies, Nalbari district is set to witness closely contested, multi-cornered battles in the Assembly elections.
