The directive was issued by Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, who stated that the order is being enforced to mark both Independence Day and Krishna Janmashtami.
The order specifies that all establishments within the municipal limits of Nagpur that sell or process meat must remain shut on Friday, August 15. The municipal body has warned that any individual or establishment found violating the order will face strict action from the municipal flying squad.
The decision comes as the country prepares for a season of celebrations. Independence Day on August 15 will see nationwide ceremonies, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address from the Red Fort in Delhi. The festival of Krishna Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, is also a significant occasion for millions across India. While Janmashtami is set to be celebrated on August 16, the municipal order acknowledges the sanctity of the festive period.
