Mumbai, 9th July. Mumbai experienced a deluge on Monday, with some areas receiving over 300 mm of rainfall within just six hours ending at 7 am. The torrential rain caused significant inundation of roads and low-lying areas, leading to severe disruptions across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, predicting more heavy showers.
Flight operations at Mumbai airport were severely affected due to low visibility, resulting in runway closures for over an hour and the cancellation of approximately 50 flights. The disruption highlights the severe impact of the heavy rains on the city’s infrastructure and services.
In response to the IMD’s heavy rainfall alert, authorities have announced the closure of schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune, and the rural areas of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg on Tuesday. The IMD has also issued red alerts for the districts of Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Satara, Pune, and Sindhudurg, while Thane and Palghar are under an orange alert.
Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Also Hit by Heavy Rains
In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rains have triggered landslides, causing significant disruption. The regional Met office in Shimla has issued a ‘yellow’ warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning at isolated places on July 11-12.
Uttarakhand continues to be battered by incessant rain, flooding rivers in the Kumaon region, blocking hundreds of rural motorable roads, and leaving several villages in Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts heavily waterlogged. The ongoing heavy rains in these regions have exacerbated the difficulties faced by residents and authorities alike.
With the IMD’s warnings in place, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
