New Delhi, 10th May. Amid growing cases of Corona another worrying disease which is coming out is the Black Fungus disease (Mucormycosis).

People who are recovering from Covid19 are getting vulnerable to mucormycosis. There have been many cases in Gujarat and Delhi where people are suffering from a dangerous disease mucormycosis after getting recovered from Covid19.

What is Black Fungus or Mucormycosis?

Mucormycosis is a type of fungal infection that spreads very rapidly in the body. It is also known as Black Fungus. Mucormycosis infection can affect the brain, lungs, or skin. In this disease, some people lose their eyesight while some patient’s jaw and nose bones are getting affected with black fungus. If the disease is not treated or controlled in time, it can also result in the death of the patient.

Black fungus or Mucormycosis weakens the ability to fight microbes present in the environment. Improper treatment at the right time can kill patients. This disease is especially dangerous for people with diabetes and chronicle disease.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that black fungus is being reported in corona patients. ICMR has issued an advisory notice that this mucormycosis is proving fatal for patients recovering from corona.

Who is More Prone to Black Fungus/ Mucormycosis?

Mucormycosis cases are usually found in diabetic patients. But if someone’s sugar level is not under control and they become corona positive, then the risk of catching this deadly disease is high. In such cases, steroids are mostly used for treatment but their use should be in a controlled way.

NITI Aayog member (health) VK Paul said on Friday that Mucormycosis cases are occurring in Covid-19 patients. “It is caused by a fungus called Mucor which is found on the wet surface,” he said. Mostly this infection occurs in diabetic patients and usually does not occur in non-diabetic patients. No such cases have been reported so far, we are monitoring the situation, he said.

What are the Symptoms of Black Fungus/ Mucormycosis?

Black fungus or mucormycosis has many symptoms of which few of them we have mentioned here:

  • Headache
  • Body pain
  • High Fever
  • Cough
  • Trouble in Breathing
  • Redness near the eyes and nose
  • Vomiting of blood
  • Altered Mental Status

The Central Government and the ICMR have advised not to ignore it. In case of such a situation, patients have been asked to consult doctors.

According to the report of PTI, the death of several patients due to this deadly infection of black fungus was reported last year. The infection had reduced or lost their eyesight and damaged the bones of nose and jaw. Doctors say that this infection is commonly seen in patients who are at the recovery stage of Corona, but they have diseases such as diabetes, kidney, cancer or heart failure.

Treatment of Black Fungus/ Mucormycosis:

As per the experts, the first thing which should be done is to make sure that the patient has a black fungus/ mucormycosis infection.

After the diagnosis, they are given very strong anti-fungal drugs. It is not necessary that the antifungal drug will cure the infection.

If the disease is not cured by the strong dose of antifungal drug, then the part of the body that is damaged due to fungal infection has to be cut and removed.

For its treatment, the patients have to stay in the hospital for several days and its treatment process is very expensive.
