Bhopal, 20th Dec: The first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise to update the electoral rolls in Madhya Pradesh concluded at midnight on Thursday, with the preliminary draft voter list scheduled to be published on Tuesday, election officials said.
As part of the revision, the Election Commission has identified nearly 42 lakh voter names for deletion from the draft rolls. These have been classified into four categories — around 8.4 lakh voters found to be deceased, nearly 2.5 lakh duplicate entries, about 8.4 lakh absent voters, and over 22.5 lakh voters who have shifted from their registered addresses. Names falling under these categories will not be included in the draft electoral roll.
In addition, verification could not be completed for over nine lakh voters who submitted enumeration forms but failed to provide mandatory or complete information. Election officials said notices will be issued to such voters, seeking clarification within the stipulated period.
The SIR exercise was extended twice by the Election Commission to ensure maximum participation. As of October 27, 2025, Madhya Pradesh had 5.74 crore registered voters. Enumeration forms were digitised and followed by large-scale door-to-door verification involving officials from district collectors to booth-level officers.
Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ram Pratap Singh Jadon said field verification revealed that a substantial number of voters listed in the rolls were either no longer alive or had relocated long ago. “Our objective is to ensure that no genuine voter is deleted and no ineligible name remains on the electoral rolls,” he said.
Following the publication of the draft rolls, the process of claims, objections, corrections and final verification will begin. Electoral Registration Officers will issue formal notices wherever discrepancies are found, officials added.
