The MoU was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and his Rajasthan counterpart Bhajan Lal Sharma, according to a statement released by the Madhya Pradesh government.
After the signing of the MoU, Yadav expressed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this project, which has been pending for almost two decades, will now come to fruition.
He further stated that the project will benefit 13 districts in the Chambal and Malwa regions of Madhya Pradesh.
Yadav emphasized that water availability will increase in the dry belt districts of the state such as Morena, Gwalior, Shivpuri, Guna, Bhind, and Sheopur. Additionally, the industrial belt districts including Indore, Ujjain, Dhar, Agar-Malwa, Shajapur, Dewas, and Rajgarh will experience further growth and development.
According to Yadav, the irrigation area in the Malwa and Chambal regions of the state will expand by about 3 lakh hectares. This will also lead to the development of religious and tourist centers in these areas, benefiting western Madhya Pradesh.
The Chief Minister assured that the project will be completed in less than 5 years, with a current estimated cost of Rs 75,000 crore. Approximately 1.5 crore people in the state will benefit from this project.
The release states that this link project aims to provide irrigation in 5.6 lakh hectares in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, as well as supply water for drinking and industrial use in 13 districts of Eastern Rajasthan and 13 districts of the Malwa and Chambal regions of Madhya Pradesh.
