The Madhya Pradesh government, led by Dr. Mohan Yadav, is considering granting a six-month extension to Chief Secretary Veera Rana. Preparation to dispatch a letter to the central government for approval is underway, according to sources.

It is believed that during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the first week of February, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav discussed extending the tenure of the chief secretary. It is almost confirmed that Rana will remain in office until September 30, 2024.

The order for her extension is expected to be issued before the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.
Veera Rana’s retirement is scheduled for March 31. If the proposal of the Mohan government is approved, Rana will become the sixth chief secretary, who will receive an extension. Before Rana, the previous Shivraj government twice granted a six-month extension to Chief Secretary Iqbal Singh Bains.

After the completion of the second extension period on November 30, Veera Rana was given additional charge as chief secretary.

According to sources, there is substantial agreement between the Prime Minister’s Office and the state government regarding Rana’s extension. The central government will issue the order for Rana’s extension before the enforcement of the Lok Sabha election Code of Conduct.

The announcement of the elections is expected by the second week of March. Rana will retire on March 31. In this case, permission from the Election Commission will be required for the order of her service extension.

After Veera Rana’s retirement, seven officers, including a batch junior to Mohammad Suleman, may have to wait for seven months. Sanjay Bandopadhyay will retire in August. Rajeev Ranjan of the same batch is posted at the Centre, but he will retire next month. Anurag Jain of the 1989 batch, serving as the central representative, may also become the chief secretary. His retirement is in August 2025.
