Moscow issues guarded response to US nuke submarine deployment by Trump

WASHINGTON – Kremlin on Monday has reacted cautiously to US President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy two nuclear submarines near Russian waters.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned against escalating “nuclear rhetoric” but downplayed the move as a routine action.
The development came after Trump stated that the US is “totally prepared” in response to a nuclear threat from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who had reminded Trump of Russia’s nuclear capabilities.
The tension between the US and Russia began when Medvedev made a statement about Russia’s nuclear strike capabilities, prompting Trump to respond with a threat of his own.
Trump ordered the deployment of two US nuclear submarines to “appropriate regions” in response to Medvedev’s comments, which he deemed “foolish and inflammatory.”
US submarines in question are Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarines, capable of carrying up to 24 Trident II D5 ballistic missiles that can deliver multiple thermonuclear warheads.

Hans Kristensen of the Federation of American Scientists pointed out that US nuclear submarines are always positioned to launch nuclear-armed missiles at targets in Russia, making the recent deployment unnecessary.
Some experts believe the move is more signaling than a genuine attempt to escalate the situation.
The deployment of US nuclear submarines has raised concerns about the potential for unintended consequences.
Trump warned that words are important and can lead to unintended consequences, expressing hope that the deployment would serve as a deterrent and prevent escalation.
Russia has set out its own terms for peace in Ukraine and has given no indication that it will comply with Trump’s 10-day deadline, media reported.
