Sendai, 30th Aug: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a joyous welcome with chants of “Modi san, welcome to Japan” from hundreds of Japanese citizens as he arrived in Sendai city on the second and concluding day of his visit to Japan.

PM Modi travelled to Sendai from Tokyo aboard the iconic Shinkansen bullet train, accompanied by his Japanese counterpart Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Sharing moments from his journey on social media platform X, he posted: “Reached Sendai. Travelled with PM Ishiba to this city on the Shinkansen.”

As he stepped out of the Sendai train station, the Prime Minister was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd comprising Japanese locals and members of the Indian diaspora. People waved, chanted “Modi san,” and children reached out for handshakes, to which Modi responded warmly with smiles and waves.

In Japanese, the suffix “san” is a widely used honorific, expressing politeness and respect, much like Mr. or Ms. in English. Its use by the Japanese citizens reflected both warmth and cultural respect in welcoming the Indian leader.

Day’s Engagements in Sendai
PM Modi is scheduled to attend a lunch hosted by Prime Minister Ishiba, followed by a visit to a semiconductor facility in the city. The visit is aimed at strengthening cooperation in technology and critical infrastructure.

Broader Japan Visit
On Friday, PM Modi held summit talks with PM Ishiba in Tokyo, where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening India-Japan cooperation in defence, trade, and technology.

During the course of his visit, Modi will tour four factories, including one manufacturing the prototype of the E10 Shinkansen bullet train, which India is actively considering for adoption.

The Prime Minister’s visit is also expected to yield several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across key sectors, including defence, business, and technology partnerships, further boosting the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
