Modi hails Trump Gaza peace plan, calls ‘a step toward lasting peace’

WASHINGTON – India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated US President Donald Trump on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan, marked a crucial step towards lasting peace in the Middle East region, in a significant diplomatic development, according to media reports.

Both leaders also reviewed the progress made in trade negotiations, agreeing to maintain close communication in the coming weeks.

Modi said on X “Spoke to my friend, President Trump and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. Also reviewed the good progress achieved in trade negotiations. Agreed to stay in close touch over the coming weeks.”

“We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan,” Modi had earlier today said in a post on X, highlighted the strong leadership of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace,” he had said.

According to media reports the agreement announced by Trump, involves a ceasefire and hostage release, with Israel agreed to withdraw its troops to an agreed-upon line.

The development has been widely welcomed, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended the diplomatic efforts and urged all parties to implement the agreement fully.

Trump stated that the Gaza peace plan is seen as a significant breakthrough in the two-year-long conflict,  “This means that all of the hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.”

India and the international community are watching the situation and development closely, hoping for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
