New Delhi, 1st Oct: Modi Government has approved the opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under the civil sector across India to meet the educational needs of children of Central Government employees. The project carries an estimated outlay of Rs 5,862.55 crore over nine years (2026-27 onwards), including Rs 2,585.52 crore for capital expenditure and Rs 3,277.03 crore for operational costs.
For the first time, these new KVs will include Balvatikas, offering three years of foundational stage (pre-primary), as envisioned under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Kendriya Vidyalaya system, established in November 1962, provides uniform educational facilities for wards of transferable and non-transferable Central Government employees, including Defence and Paramilitary personnel. Currently, India has 1,288 functional KVs, including three abroad in Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran, with a total enrollment of approximately 13.62 lakh students as of June 2025.
Among the 57 new KVs, 7 will be sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs, while the remaining 50 will be supported by State and UT authorities. The expansion prioritizes underserved regions, covering 17 states/UTs, including 20 districts with no existing KV, 14 Aspirational districts, 4 Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) districts, and 5 schools in North-Eastern and hilly areas.
The new KVs are expected to benefit approximately 86,640 students. Each full-fledged KV, from Balvatika to Class XII, provides 81 employment opportunities, generating a total of 4,617 direct jobs. Construction and allied activities will also create additional employment for skilled and unskilled workers.
The proposal strengthens the KVS network as model schools under NEP 2020, ensuring quality education reaches underserved regions, aspirational districts, and areas with a significant number of Central Government employees. KVs are widely regarded for their academic excellence, innovative pedagogy, and robust infrastructure, consistently delivering top CBSE results.
The expansion of KVs demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality education and balanced growth across India.
