New Delhi, 4th Jan. The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth Rs 802 Crores for the procurement of military equipment. On January 4, 2024, in New Delhi, the Ministry of Defence signed two contracts.
The first contract is for the procurement of 697 Bogie Open Military (BOM) Wagons from M/s Jupiter Wagons Limited at a cost of 473 Cr.
The second contract is for the procurement of 56 Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment (MMME) Mark II from M/s BEML Ltd at a cost of 329 Cr.
These contracts fall under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
The BOM Wagons and MMME will be produced using equipment and sub-systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers.
This move aims to boost indigenous manufacturing and increase the participation of the private sector in defense production, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Bogie Open Military (BOM) wagons are specialized wagons designed by the Research Design and Standard Organization (RDSO). They are used by the Indian Army for the mobilization of Army units.
These wagons are used to transport light vehicles, artillery guns, BMPs, engineering equipment, etc., from their peacetime locations to operational areas. The procurement of these wagons will ensure the speedy and simultaneous induction of units and equipment into operational areas during any conflict situation.
They will also facilitate the movement of units for military exercises and transfers between stations during peacetime. The marking of all minefields is a mandatory requirement for India as a signatory to the amended Protocol-II on Convention in certain Conventional Weapons.
The Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment (MMME) Mark II has been designed to operate cross country with a full load of stores. It can carry out the marking of minefields with minimal time and manpower employment.
The equipment is based on a high mobility vehicle with advanced mechanical and electrical systems. This will reduce the time required for minefield marking during operations and enhance the operational capability of the Indian Army.
