Sairang, 15th Dec: Mizoram marked a major milestone in its transportation journey on Sunday as Sairang Railway Station handled its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, carrying 119 cars by rail from Changsari near Guwahati.
The historic rail movement is expected to significantly enhance vehicle availability in Aizawl, reduce dependence on long and challenging road transport, and provide a boost to Mizoram’s automobile sector, benefiting dealers, service providers and customers alike. The development underlines Indian Railways’ commitment to improving connectivity and supporting inclusive regional growth.
The automobile consignment arrived via the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a major infrastructure achievement for the state. Stretching over 51.38 kilometres and passing through 45 tunnels, the line has been carved through difficult terrain and plays a crucial role in integrating Mizoram with the rest of the country.
The Bairabi–Sairang rail line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025. On the occasion, he flagged off the Rajdhani Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal, the Mizoram Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Guwahati, and an express train connecting Aizawl (Sairang) with Kolkata, formally integrating Mizoram into India’s national rail network.
Passenger response to the new train services has been encouraging, with high occupancy levels recorded across routes. The Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express is operating at 147 per cent occupancy, the Sairang–Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115 per cent, and the Sairang–Kolkata Express at 139 per cent. Rail connectivity has improved access to major cities, economic hubs, education and medical facilities, while offering time-saving and cost-effective travel.
Freight operations on the route commenced soon after inauguration. The first freight movement on September 14, 2025, transported 21 cement wagons from Assam to Aizawl. Since then, the line has carried essential commodities including cement, construction materials, sand, stone chips and automobiles.
Parcel services have also begun, with the first consignment booked on September 19, 2025, when Anthurium flowers were transported from Sairang to Anand Vihar Terminal via the Rajdhani Express. Between September 17 and December 12, 2025, a total of 17 freight and parcel rakes were handled.
These developments indicate that the Bairabi–Sairang rail line is fast emerging as a reliable logistics corridor, lowering transportation costs and supporting Mizoram’s infrastructural and economic development.
