PM Modi Launches 'Mission Mausam' at IMD's 150th Foundation Day

New Delhi, 14th Jan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He emphasized IMD’s century-and-a-half journey as a testament to India’s scientific and technological progress.
The PM launched Mission Mausam, aimed at transforming India into a “weather-ready and climate-smart” nation. He also unveiled the IMD Vision-2047 document, outlining future strategies for weather resilience and climate adaptation, along with commemorative postage stamps and coins to mark the occasion.
Highlighting advancements, Modi noted IMD’s expansion in infrastructure, including Doppler radars, automatic weather stations, and improved forecasting tools like the Meghdoot app, which provides localized weather updates in multiple languages.
He praised IMD’s pivotal role in disaster management, citing its Flash Flood Guidance system that serves neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. The PM also reflected on India’s historical meteorological knowledge from ancient texts like Surya Siddhanta and modernized its integration into science.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and WMO Secretary-General Prof. Celeste Saulo were among the dignitaries present.
