“Medicine Is a Service to Humanity”: President Murmu at AIIMS Gorakhpur Convocation

Gorakhpur, 30th June: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday attended the first convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Gorakhpur, commending the institute’s rapid strides in medical education and healthcare delivery in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said the name ‘AIIMS’ evokes the image of world-class treatment, cutting-edge medical technology, and highly dedicated doctors. “AIIMS institutions are symbols of India’s growing medical capabilities where patients find new hope. From surgical innovation and early diagnostics to integrated AYUSH and allopathy-based treatments, AIIMS has set benchmarks in healthcare delivery and research,” she noted.
President Murmu lauded AIIMS Gorakhpur for its remarkable achievements in a short span, highlighting its vital role in making high-quality, affordable healthcare accessible to people in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and even across the border in Nepal. She said the institute was fast becoming a hub for excellence in medical services in the region.
The President emphasized the vital role doctors play in nation-building. “Doctors are not only healers of disease but also builders of a healthy society,” she remarked. She urged young medical graduates to extend their services to underserved, rural, and tribal populations that lack access to advanced healthcare.
Highlighting the importance of compassion in healthcare, President Murmu called upon medical educators to foster empathy and doctor-patient communication as essential components of training. “Medicine is not just a profession, it is a service to humanity. Compassion and honesty must be integral to every doctor’s character,” she said.
Concluding her address, the President expressed confidence that the young doctors graduating from AIIMS Gorakhpur would uphold the values of service, integrity, and medical excellence while contributing to the health and progress of the nation.
